An algorithm is developed to generate sentences with ellipsis, gapping, right-node-raising, and non-constituent coordination constructions. To enhance the reusability of such views, we are constructing a view Query Manager application. The Query Manager allows queries to be edited, executed, and stored for reuse. View queries are discoverable by searching the Query Manager's metadata catalog. The Query Manager also supports the storage of materialized view results upon which further queries may be issued

Milk Consumption Following Exercise Reduces Subsequent Energy Intake in Female Recreational Exercisers

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of skimmed milk as a recovery drink following moderate–vigorous cycling exercise on subsequent appetite and energy intake in healthy, female recreational exercisers. Utilising a randomised cross-over design, nine female recreational exercisers (19.7 ± 1.3 years) completed a V̇O2peak test followed by two main exercise trials. The main trials were conducted following a standardised breakfast. Following 30 min of moderate-vigorous exercise (65% V̇O2peak), either 600 mL of skimmed milk or 600 mL of orange drink (475 mL orange juice from concentrate, 125 mL water), which were isoenergetic (0.88 MJ), were ingested, followed 60 min later with an ad libitum pasta meal. Absolute energy intake was reduced 25.2% ± 16.6% after consuming milk compared to the orange drink (2.39 ± 0.70 vs. 3.20 ± 0.84 MJ, respectively; p = 0.001). Relative energy intake (in relation to the energy content of the recovery drinks and energy expenditure) was significantly lower after milk consumption compared to the orange drink (1.49 ± 0.72 vs. 2.33 ± 0.90 MJ, respectively; p = 0.005). There were no differences in AUC (× 1 h) subjective appetite parameters (hunger, fullness and desire to eat) between trials. Exploring attitudes towards a randomised controlled trial of venous access devices – a nested pre-trial qualitative study

Purpose: This pre-trial qualitative research study was carried out to explore patient and clinical staff attitudes to central venous access devices (CVADs). In addition, views about participation in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) were explored with the aim of maximising recruitment to an imminent RCT of three CVADs. Methods: Three patient focus groups (each comprising three patients) and 23 interviews with clinical staff were conducted. Interviews and focus group discussions were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, anonymised, uploaded to the QSR NVivo10 qualitative software programme and thematically analysed. Results: Analysis of focus group interviews revealed the added challenges that a CVAD poses to patients with cancer. Four key themes emerged: continuity of daily life, pain and discomfort, stigma (a mark of disgrace associated with certain conditions) and self-preservation. The findings show the impact of a CVAD on patients’ ability to manage their condition. Clinical staff interviews highlighted several potential barriers to recruitment; a lack of equipoise (genuine clinical uncertainty as to which intervention is the most beneficial), concerns about the logistics of device insertion and a perceived requirement for education and training. Conclusions: This qualitative study raises awareness of key areas of concern to patients who need a CVAD for chemotherapy delivery. It was identified that there is a need for clearer patient information around CVADs. Additionally it allows investigators to identify barriers to recruitment in a timely manner in order to minimise the potential for conflict between the roles of carer and researcher and consequently, maximise recruitment to the RCT

Preparation and Properties of In-Situ Devices Using the SALD and SALDVI Techniques

One of the many advantages of Selective Area Laser Deposition (SALD) and Selective Area Laser Deposition Vapor Infiltration (SALDVI) is that they can be used to embed in-situ micro-sensors within macro-components. A single-point SiC/C thermocouple sensor embedded within a SiC macro-component and electrically insulated with silicon nitride layers has been demonstrated. In many applications, multi-point sensors within a single component are needed, e.g., in monitoring the temperature gradient and distribution at different positions. In this paper, multi-point thermocouple devices are demonstrated. The macro-component is a SiC bulk shape made by infiltrating vapor deposited silicon carbide into a silicon carbide powder bed using the SALDVI technique. Multiple SiC/C thermocouples are embedded in-situ in the SiC bulk shape using the SALD technique. Where is the Proper Balance? Public Access to Government Information in an Era of Concern over National Security

My goal today is not to tell you precisely where the proper balance is, because that can only be worked out in democratic interplay among the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches of our governments. That process is awkward, halting, and sometimes maddening; but I continue to have great faith in the wisdom of our Founders, who perceived that checks and balances would over time prove a guarantor of our liberties. We must always remember that the Founders deliberately structured the Federal government so that it could never be too efficient. Recall that Benito Mussolini made great progress in making the trains run on time in Fascist Italy, but the tradeoff was, well...Fascist Italy. So what is my goal today? I would like to provide a framework for thinking about the issues surrounding public access to government information in an era of concern over national security. I will review several real life examples drawn from situations that have been reported by the news media and that I know personally from my work as a Government Documents librarian. I certainly bring some bias to my understanding of these situations, arising both from my personal political predilections and my professional obligations, but I will strive to make my editorializing clear as such. I hope that my presentation today will leave you with some ideas to ponder and help you toward your own sense of where the proper balance lies.
